‘Nightmarish soap opera’ continues at Wednesday
Sheffield Wednesday are set to be served a winding-up petition with the club owing a reported £1m to HMRC.
Despite significant fan protest and pressure during the last year, Wednesday’s owner Dejphon Chansiri has so far refused to sell the club.
A winding-up petition would increase that pressure, particularly as the Owls remain under a host of English Football League embargoes having failed to pay employee wages on time in five of the last seven months.
The ongoing uncertainty has seen many players and staff depart Hillsborough, and clearly impacted the team’s form on the pitch, with Wednesday returning just six points from their first nine games and sitting second bottom in the table.
Niall Couper, CEO of Fair Game UK, said: “What is playing out at Hillsborough is a nightmarish soap opera.
“Sheffield Wednesday is a fantastic club that is right at the heart of a proud community.
“Our hearts go out to the fans who have been left watching this debacle unfold. They’ve done everything they can to highlight the ongoing issues at the club and protested with real dignity.
“The fact that the existence of one of English football’s historic clubs continues to be at threat is a disgrace.
“It is time that the owners moved aside and pulled the curtain down on this very sorry episode.”
