The (virtual) pen is mightier than the sword

Fair Game’s Adam Harwood issues a simple call to football fans, sign our petition and deliver a strong message to DCMS: now is the time for change

While it may now be approaching a year since the European Super League proposal was quickly debunked, the problems staining our national game have as yet not got any easier.

Tracey Crouch’s recent report into football governance has been broadly well received, but amid a backdrop of both internal and external fighting over the future of Derby County, and speculation over Bradford City selling out to a cryptocurrency firm, it’s quite clear that all is not well in the lower rungs of our national game. Clubs throughout the country are still hampered by fan exclusion from grounds for most of last season, and are therefore very much still fighting to balance the books.

All this, against the backdrop of the second highest spending January in history for Premier League clubs, who splashed £295 million – suggesting that in their case, at least, Covid-19 financial fears are long since passed.

Football needs to be fairer. Clubs who care about the future of the national game, along with their own future at the heart of their communities, should be given more money to invest. Better still, in the backdrop of the David Goodwillie signing at Raith Rovers, clubs should be supported to do the right thing in areas including equality and the environment.

That’s why we continue to call on fans of all clubs to sign our petition, which will be delivered to the door of Nadine Dorries, the Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport. Signing our petition will add your name to the thousands who have so far called on the Government to build on the excellent Crouch report and actually ensure lasting change is implemented. Help us reach our target of 30,000.

There’s no reason to delay. Sign today!
