Fair Game pledges to support regulator and deliver fairer future

”We know that if we work together, with openness, collaboration and ambition, we can build a future where every fan can wear their club’s shirt with pride: confident that the team they love will be there for generations to come, standing tall at the heart of their community.”

FAIR GAME today pledged to help make the football regulator a success and build a fairer future for football. The pledge comes in the following statement about the organisation’s future.

The statement reads:

“The introduction of a new Independent Football Regulator represents a landmark moment in the history of football. For the first time, a path has been laid to create a fairer future for football.

“Since its formation in early 2021, this has been Fair Game’s primary goal and while acknowledging and celebrating this significant development our work is not done.

“Having a Regulator provides a once-in-a-generation opportunity to reshape the game we love: to build a fairer, more financially sustainable, and community-rooted future for football. Fair Game will be doing all it can to work closely with the Regulator and ensure it succeeds.

“Since our inception, Fair Game has worked closely with clubs, academics, charities and industry experts to produce rigorous research to address the problems in our National Game.

“We have published numerous reports on topics such as football’s finances, gender, environment, fan engagement and ethics.

“We created the Fair Game Index, the largest analysis of men’s professional football in England, which benchmarks clubs on financial sustainability, governance and equality standards.

“We worked with legal experts to assess the Fan-Led Review and the Football Governance Act, drafting amendments and suggesting changes.

“In all of the areas Fair Game raised, we either saw the legislation altered or received commitments from the Government or the DCMS that those issues will be addressed.

“Fair Game is proud of its reputation for deep, data-driven analysis and lobbying. That foundation will remain at the heart of everything we do.

“But as football now enters a new phase, so does Fair Game.

“We believe in football’s power to be a force for good. Over the coming years, Fair Game will continue to focus on finding solutions, working hand-in-hand with clubs across the football pyramid, key stakeholders and, crucially, the Regulator, to develop practical, realistic ways to tackle the challenges the game faces.

“Whether it’s addressing financial mismanagement, boosting equality standards, or embedding clubs more deeply into their local communities, Fair Game is committed to helping drive lasting, positive change.

“We know that if we work together, with openness, collaboration and ambition, we can build a future where every fan can wear their club’s shirt with pride: confident that the team they love will be there for generations to come, standing tall at the heart of their community.

“For the first time in decades, there is real momentum for reform.

“Just as we have done since 2021, Fair Game will embrace fellow stakeholders, and will continue to help lead the way.”
