I long for the day when there is no need for the Price of Football podcast
‘Everyone involved with the Price of Football is proud and happy to endorse Fair Game’
Kevin Day
KEVIN DAY here. Along with football finance expert Kieran Maguire, I have been presenting the Price of Football podcast since October 2019. It is a show about the money behind the beautiful game and, unfortunately, it has become very popular.
And it has become very popular because millions of football fans across the world are anxious that the game is slipping away from them. The very first story we covered was the possible demise of Bury FC, which as we know, to the shame of the football authorities, was allowed to happen.
We long for the day when there is no need for the Price of Football: the day when the money in English football is distributed fairly amongst 92 clubs, the day when fans can afford tickets again, the day when football grounds are treated the same way as listed buildings, the day when there are proper tests to prevent speculators and sharks from taking over cherished football clubs, the day when the Government recognises the unique place that football has in its community - not just as an historical link to long-lost crafts and traditions but as a vibrant modern-day hub for the people around it; as we saw recently when so many clubs (and players) helped their community through Covid.
That day will happen because fans will make it happen, and brilliant organisations like Fair Game will make it happen. This week, the mayors of Liverpool and Manchester (two great football rivals) officially endorsed Fair Game and everyone involved with the Price of Football is proud and happy to do the same thing.
